About Best Mochi Australia
Passionate mochi enthusiasts on a mission to share the joy of Japanese rice cakes with Australia
Our Story
Best Mochi Australia was born from a simple moment of pure joy: biting into our first piece of authentic daifuku at a small Japanese confectionery in Sydney's Chinatown. That soft, pillowy texture of the mochi wrapper, the subtle sweetness of the shiro-an (white bean paste), and the delicate dusting of katakuriko (potato starch) — it was love at first bite.
What started as a personal passion quickly grew into something more. We found ourselves spending weekends hunting down the best mochi across Australia, from the traditional wagashi shops in Melbourne's Japanese quarter to the modern mochi ice cream brands popping up in supermarket freezers. We learned about the ancient art of mochitsuki (rice pounding), the significance of mochi in Japanese New Year celebrations, and the countless regional varieties that exist throughout Japan.
But we also noticed a problem. Many Australians were curious about mochi but didn't know where to start. Should they try mochi ice cream first, or go straight for traditional daifuku? What's the difference between mochigome and regular rice? Is it true that mochi can be dangerous to eat? The questions were endless, and reliable information was scattered.
That's why we created Best Mochi Australia in 2023. Our mission is simple: to be the most trusted and comprehensive resource for mochi lovers in Australia. We don't just list products — we test them ourselves, research their origins, and provide honest assessments. We write detailed guides explaining everything from the proper way to store mochi to the cultural significance of different varieties.
Our team has collectively tasted over 100 different mochi products, visited numerous Japanese confectioneries, and even attempted our own homemade mochi (with varying degrees of success!). We've built relationships with importers and specialty stores across Australia, and we stay up-to-date with new product launches and seasonal offerings.
Whether you're a complete beginner curious about your first mochi experience, or a seasoned enthusiast looking for the next great flavour to try, we're here to help. We believe that everyone deserves to experience the unique pleasure that is mochi — that moment when the soft, chewy texture gives way to a burst of flavour, and you understand exactly why this humble rice cake has been cherished in Japan for over a thousand years.
Thank you for being part of our community. Here's to many more mochi moments together!
